A certified 501(c)(3), Unbound Visual Arts (UVA) highlights Greater Boston artists through exhibits and programs that foster community engagement and social change through innovative curatorial strategies.
Since our founding in 2012, we’ve focused on presenting contemporary art that critically engages with our present moment – believing that art has the potential to interrogate social norms, redefine perspectives, and transmit new ideas. All of our exhibits are presented at our gallery in Brighton, MA.
Another central part of our mission includes building a strong network of local artists as we primarily showcase the work of artists who live and reside in the Greater Boston area. We believe it’s important to focus on the voices of local creatives and their contributions to our cultural ecosystem.
Outside of exhibits, we coordinate artist talks, organize performances, and develop other programming that intersects with or goes beyond visual art.
Our Programming
-
We curate contemporary art exhibitions that push us toward new ways of engaging with the world around us. Whether it be looking through the lens of an artist’s unique perspective or interrogating the social and political systems that structure our world, we value work that makes us imagine differently and look critically. Our exhibits have examined subjects ranging from environmental sustainability, health and wellness, and the structures of gender and race.
Our hope is that our exhibitions function as educational tools, aesthetic experiments, and prompts for social engagement and action.
-
Each year, UVA hosts a 6-8 week residency complete with a stipend for the artist, funding for materials, documentation, and access to the gallery as studio space for the duration of the residency. The project culminates in an exhibition that showcases works completed and in-progress.
-
We organize a range of performances including music, sound art, readings, and experimental performance art. If you’re interested in participating or curating a night of performance, reach out to info@unboundvisualarts.org
-
We’re always looking for new partnerships and ways to collaborate with other non-profit organizations, artist collectives, independent organizers, and local event series.
If you’d like to inquire about co-hosting an event, developing a companion exhibition, or renting our space for your own event, please fill out our contact form or email info@unboundvisualarts.org
