She has taken courses with Jill Pottle and Joy Dai Buell at the deCordova Museum, and workshops with Ellen Rolli. Her continuing studies with Jill Pottle include weeklong landscape workshops in Orr’s Island, Maine. McAlpine has exhibited paintings at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, Watertown. Turning to the arts after retiring from an academic career, she also writes poetry, and participates in several local workshops. She resides in Brighton. She has participated in the first UVA Members Exhibition at the Harvard Ed Portal in 2013 and in the Olympic SPIRIT at Boston City Hall's Scollay Square Gallery in 2015. Her solo exhibition, organized by UVA, was Monica McAlpine: Waterscape Edges at the Faneuil Library Art Gallery in 2015. See that exhibit here.
