As usual, this curated UVA exhibition with a designer will have a major opening program and reception on March 30, 2019, 1:00 – 4:30 pm  with live music, performance art, refreshments, short artist and curator talks, a full printed program that includes information on all artists and all artwork, an on-line exhibition with sales, and art insurance for all artwork.

Preliminary Statement:

This exhibition champions the voice of women toward nonviolence. It’s intended to create a dialogue about the role of women in advocating and stopping the outbreak of war and in reducing the spread of violence throughout the world and in our communities. Violence is often the result of economic imbalance, political radicalization, racism, religious intolerance, and gender inequality.  As a group, women have been the victims of violence and oppression themselves and are often on the front lines of peaceful solutions and negotiations. Those peace and non-violent efforts include education, protests, boycotts, campaigns, and acts of civil disobedience. Could military conflicts and violent crimes be lessened if more women were in positions of leadership? Could issues like gun control, mass shootings, terrorism, refugees, and nuclear disarmament be better addressed by women?

The exhibition takes place during Women’s History Month in the United States, for which the 2019 theme is “Visionary Women: Champions of Peace & Nonviolence,” and you can get inspiration from the 2019 visionary honorees.

Additional suggestions for consideration by artists and other creative people:

Here are some key areas for the art (abstract and non-abstract in all media, 2 or 3 dimensional) to help tell the story and provide a rich learning experience.  We are also seeking poetry, prose, performance art, installations, and theater sets related the theme. These are only suggestions, however. Your work may address one, some or your own ideas for this topic.  Just try to connect your art in some way to the theme.  The curator will develop the story. All members may submit up to six (6) works. All works not selected for the “Peace in Her Time” exhibition will be displayed and be for sale at the March 30, 2018 Opening Program and Reception, if the artist agrees.
