Susan Johnson

Susan’s images are mostly of natural forms, found in the landscapes that surround us, but she’s always looking for the linear in the natural, seeking to find the angles and geometry that hold the whole scene together, the hidden image below the surface.

She has traveled cross-country, through Canada and the Yukon, spent a week on the beach in a dune shack, went to Alaska six times in search of the vast and open landscape, though she can honestly say that the same beauty can be had right here, within our urban parks, but on a smaller and more personal scale. One only has to look closely.

Susan attended The Art Institute of Boston studying Fine Art and Photography and went on to work at several of Boston’s professional photo labs. She spent 15 years doing custom Color and Black and White darkroom work and opened her own custom photo lab in Cambridge which she ran for 9 years. After changing careers, getting two Associates Degrees and becoming an X-ray Technician, she couldn’t help but feel something was missing. And so, returning to the creative world became a pull too strong to resist. Even after being forced to trade the darkroom for digital, the basic proven rules of that darkroom are still followed in the production of her final images.

Some smaller prints are still made using a traditional process, but she prints larger images herself using an Archival Ink Jet printer with Moab Lasal Matte, a durable cotton rag paper with a beautiful tooth.

The surface is velvety soft and dead matte, producing a print that seems more like a lithographic or traditional printmaking process than a photo.
