Artists may submit up to six (6) works of art, with images, by Sunday August 23, 2015.  The Scollay Square Gallery is the largest gallery in Boston City Hall and gets many visitors everyday.  All artists will sign the standard exhibition and loan agreement which states that Unbound Visual Arts (UVA) is entitled to a 35% commission on all sales.  The full exhibition will also be placed on UVA’s website in perpetuity for continued on-line sales.  UVA will manage the installation with the Scollay Square Gallery at Boston City Hall, all sales and all publicity, including a postcard, and the opening reception. Artists will be notified by August 31.   The Opening Reception, an official ArtWeek Boston event, will be Thursday, October 1st from 4:30 – 6:00 pm. There will be refreshments from Whole Foods and new offices at Ten Guest Street, Brighton. It’s the WGBH/New Balance Brighton Landing Building, off Market St.  It’s right across the street from the Stockyard Restaurant.   Free validated parking across the street in garage or in the WGBH visitor lot.

The art does not need to be a literal interpretation of the Olympics. In fact, we expect most will not be, but rather will focus on attributes of the Olympics such as commitment, cooperation, courage, determination, inspiration, passion and perseverance.  An international perspective is also encouraged. This exhibition was not intended to be closely related to the proposed Boston 2024 Olympics, so the end of Boston 2024 does NOT affect this exhibition.

Preliminary Exhibition Statement:

This exhibition is about the Olympic Spirit and its various manifestations in life such as commitment, cooperation, courage, determination, inspiration, passion, and perseverance.  These actions are presented through art and influenced by and related to the Olympic games – its goals, its world-wide involvement and the good will of over 200 countries, and a wide array of private and group behaviors.  The art includes both 2 and 3 dimensional representational and conceptual works that present personal, physical, and psychological qualities that relate to the spirit, the competition, and the tradition of the Olympics. The art includes literal and non-literal interpretations related to the Olympics.

The arts have always played an important role in the Olympics.  Beginning with the early Greek Olympics starting in 776 BCE and lasting 1400 years, artists captured the glory and the athletic achievements on clay, on walls, and in drawings. Then, in the first half of the 20th century, artists competed for medals by creating works of art that were motivated by the sporting endeavors and the Olympic ideals.  For over 120 years, the modern Olympics has been striving to bring about world cooperation, education, and peace through athletic competition. Those principles have always been at the heart of the games, held every 2 years but not always successfully achieved.  Many political, economic and religious differences and conflicts have often overshadowed the goals but nonetheless the games have continued to bring men and women together from almost every nation on earth.  The five rings of the official Olympics flag represent the five continents of the world while the colors (black, green, red, yellow and blue) of the rings represent the nations of the world.
