Jaclyn Meyer graduated from Massachusetts College of Art with a BFA in Painting in 2010 and received her Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Art Education from Tufts University with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 2013. She also received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her experience includes teaching art at the McCall Middle School in Winchester. She also has experience as a history teacher for the Arlington After School Program and as a Student Teaching Intern at Revere High School. She has exhibited her work in many area venues including participating in Unbound Visual Arts’ Song Cycles exhibition at the Honan-Allston Library Art Gallery in 2014.
Jaclyn probably created one of her favorite pieces in elementary school, of a bird of paradise that won honorable mention at a town day. Ever since then she has held a great satisfaction with dripping paint and vividly depicting her relationship of the world through her artwork. She loves to work on paper and on canvas and believes that teaching art is a great way to continue to challenge yourself in the studio. Jaclyn’s process includes being hyperaware and enchanted at the world around her (much to her friend’s annoyance), thinking and imagining deeply at her relationships with beautiful organic forms and her own personal memories (sometimes so much so that she forgets everything else) and constantly painting over what she has painted with paper, paint or spackle when it doesn’t look like a bird of paradise.
Artist Statement:
I consider myself to be an organic expressionist, someone who has a muse in the natural world. I twist and turn natural forms into agitated dreamscapes filled with color and energy. As a hardy New Englander, I find myself most inspired around the colors, smells and feelings associated with the change of seasons. I create gritty textures with my work from layers of paint, paper or whatever material meanders its way into my studio. I constantly am creating works that are messy and brimming with life. I constantly find myself struggling between themes of freedom and entrapment as I oscillate freely between both. Ultimately I leave it for the viewer to decide how they feel as long as they are feeling something
