Main Activities and Accomplishments

February 9, 2016, 4th Annual Mardi Gras & Carnival Arts Celebration, The Social Restaurant & Bar, 320 Washington St., Newton, MA.   There was live music provided by the Josiah Reibstein Trio, hors d’oeuvres, dancing, art show, raffle, silent auction, special drinks, and lots of fun.  The next Arts Celebration is February 28, 2017.

April 30 – May 1, 2016, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, UVA at Brookline Open Art Studios, Chestnut Park at Cleveland Circle, 50 Sutherland Rd., Brighton.  This was UVA’s first year as a participant.

June 18, 2016 – July 29, 2016Freedom, curated by John Quatrale, at the Honan-Allston Library Art Gallery, 300 North Harvard St., Allston, MA.  An exhibition about our personal and community efforts to achieve freedom.  Artists include Jean Aserkoff, Romani Berlekov, Linda Clave, Gary Duehr. Alicia Dwyer, Phoebe Ann Erb, Sue-Yee Leung, Pauline Lim, Susan Loomis-Wing, Maria Trudette Madison, Nhung Mackey, Ruth Rieffanaugh, Diane Sheridan, Ruth Segaloff, and Ellen Zellner. 

June 18, 2016 Freedom Public Opening Reception, curated by John Quatrale, at the Honan-Allston Library Art Gallery, 300 North Harvard St., Allston, MA.   Pianist and singer Mae Siu Wai Stroshane, refreshments, raffle and short artist talks by Phoebe Ann Erb, Sue-Yee Leung, and Maria Trudette Madison.  

June 10, 2016 – July 22, 2016Temptation of the Mind and Body, curated by Kayla Spafford, at the Harvard Ed Portal Art Gallery, 224 Western Ave., Allston, MA.  The exhibition that explores the science and psychology of temptation and how it manifests in everyday life.  Artists include Joanne Desmond, Amy Kelly, Pauline Lim, Joan Mullen, Alexandra Roszenman, Ruth Segaloff, and Nohelia Vargas.

June 10, 2016 – Public Opening Reception for Temptation of the Mind and Body, curated by Kayla Spafford, at the Harvard Ed Portal Art Gallery, 224 Western Ave., Allston, MA.   Jazz singer Beth Purcell and pianist Brian Friedland, refreshments, wine, raffle.

June 22, 2016 – Artist Talks by Joan Mullen, Alexandra Rozenman and Nohelia Vargas as part of the Temptation of the Mind and Body exhibition with introductions by Kayla Spafford, curator.

September, 2016 – UVA awarded a Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) Festivals Grant for UVA’s 2017 Mardi Gras and Carnival Arts Celebration on February 28, 2017.

September, 2016 – UVA Board of Directors approves the management of the 2017 CityHeart Art Sale in April, 2017 at the Shops at the Prudential Center.

October 8, 2016 – 2nd annual  UVA Allston-Brighton Art and Architecture Bike tour.

November 11-13, 2016UVA @ Allston Arts District Open Studios. UVA partiicpated in its 5th Open Studio event and showcased 10 UVA artists at the 119 Braintree St. Arts Building (first floor near the cafe) on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, the following individual UVA artists had their own show and sales space at the 119 Braintree St. Arts Building:  Linda Clave, Christine Winship, Nadia Parsons, Andrea Newman, Diane Sheridan, and Francis Gardino.

Other Activities and Accomplishments

November 28 & 29, 2016 – UVA participated in #CyberMonday and #GivingTuesday

November 9-11, 2016New England Museum Association (NEMA) Annual Conference, Mystic CT.  UVA is an institutional member and participated.

November 2, 2016 – UVA participated in the Massachusetts Non Profit Network Annual Conference and Expo at the Sheraton Tara in Framingham.

November 5, 2016  Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty at Lesley University, curated by Merry Forestta.  Free. Co-sponsored by Boston Art Enthusiasts.

October 28, 2016 – UVA participated in #ArtsMatterDay, presented by MassCreative.

October 23, 2016 – UVA 1st Used Book Sale and Flea Market at the Oak Square School parking lot.  It was a chance for members to clean out a closet or two and help UVA at the same time.

October 14, 2016 – UVA at the opening for Katha Seidman’s Night Watch at the Brookline Arts Center.  Co-sponsored by Boston Art Enthusiasts Meetup.

September 16, 2016 – UVA participated in the Boston University (BU) Arts Initiative Fall Art Fair, George Sherman Union Plaza, 775 Commonwealth Ave., Boston.

September 7, 2016 UVA trip to MFA’s “Making Modern” exhibition.  Co-sponsored by the Boston Art Enthusiasts Meetup.

August 24, 2016 – UVA at Longwood Symphony Orchestra concert at the DCR Hatch Shell.

July, 2016 – UVA launched its Member Artist Opportunities and Resource webpage

March, 2016 – UVA launched its weblog.
